Dutch hospitality sector reaches record employment but faces youth shortages and harassment issues
In 2025, the Nederlandse horeca sector achieved an all-time high, employing 522,005 individuals. However, the industry continues to grapple with a persistent labor shortage and alarming rates of harassment, particularly affecting young workers, as noted by Marijke Vuik, chair of Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN), meldt Nieuws Impuls.
The upward trend in employment figures masks significant underlying challenges. Despite the record number of employed individuals, the hospitality sector is still seeking to attract younger talent. The difficulties in recruiting young workers are compounded by the negative experiences associated with workplace harassment, which remain a major concern.
Vuik emphasized that addressing harassment in the workplace is essential to fostering a safe environment for young employees. The KHN is actively working on initiatives aimed at mitigating these issues and improving overall conditions within the sector.
The combination of labor shortages and harassment concerns raises questions about the future sustainability of the horeca industrie. If these challenges are not addressed effectively, the sector may face further difficulties in meeting demand and maintaining growth in the coming years.
Industry stakeholders are urged to collaborate on solutions that enhance the safety and appeal of hospitality jobs to potential young recruits. Without significant changes, the sector risks jeopardizing its hard-fought progress amid a recovering economy.
